The Tech Guru Turned Agent
Stephen spent over two decades building a successful career in the tech industry. From managing large data centers to leading software product development at billion-dollar enterprises, Stephen has seen it all. But deep down, he always had an eye on real estate, especially the investment side.
"It started with YouTube videos and books," Stephen said. "I was fascinated by the idea of passive income through real estate."
That curiosity turned into commitment when he crossed paths with Lavar, his now-mentor and team leader at Dream Select Realty. Their daughters played basketball together, and the friendship quickly evolved into a business relationship. Lavar saw Stephen’s potential and pushed him to get his real estate license. After some hesitation, Stephen finally made the leap – and he hasn’t looked back since.
A Whole New World
Despite his prior experience as a real estate client, Stephen admits he underestimated the behind-the-scenes hustle that agents do.
"I used to think agents just helped buy or sell a house. I didn’t realize how many steps are involved," he said.
One of his first listings for a friend gave him a crash course in client management, scheduling, open houses, and crisis resolution. From setting strategic time windows for showings to navigating deal fallouts, Stephen quickly realized real estate is anything but simple.
"Every transaction is unique. Training helps, but nothing beats real-world experience."
Enter: Wholesaling
Alongside traditional transactions, Stephen is also diving into wholesaling – a strategy that involves finding off-market properties and connecting motivated sellers with cash buyers.
"It's about solving problems. Whether it's pre-foreclosure, absentee owners, or inherited properties, we help homeowners get cash quickly without going through the traditional sales process," he explained.
He and Lavar recently launched a wholesale division at Dream Select Realty, opening new revenue opportunities for agents and faster solutions for clients.
Communication is King
One of the key lessons Stephen emphasizes is communication.
"You’ve got to be transparent and educate your clients. Whether it’s a buyer or seller, people need to understand what’s happening every step of the way," he said.
When one of his deals fell through just days before closing, his open and consistent communication kept the seller calm and confident.
"I walked them through it. Explained why it happened, what we were doing next, and made sure they never felt left in the dark."
Tech-Savvy = Superpower
Stephen’s background in technology has made his real estate transition smoother and more efficient.
"Most agents take weeks to learn new systems. I’m up and running in days," he said.
He uses AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity to write listings, craft marketing messages, and streamline communications.
"It saves hours and helps me stay ahead of the game."
A User-First Approach
Another advantage from his tech days? A user-first mindset.
"In product development, you involve the user from the start to create something that actually works. I do the same with my clients. I ask questions, get clarity on their goals, and keep them involved throughout the process."
Whether it's setting showing parameters or guiding a client through the mortgage maze, Stephen treats every client like a product user – someone whose problems he's there to solve.
Predictions & Advice
As AI continues to grow, Stephen predicts it will reshape real estate – but not in the way people fear.
"AI won't replace agents. It will enhance them. The agents who embrace it will thrive. The ones who don't? They’ll get left behind."
His advice to other agents is clear: embrace technology, stay curious, and never stop learning. For buyers and sellers, he stresses clarity and communication.
"Know what you want. Be open. And choose an agent who understands today’s tools."
